About Me
I am known as Nana, a Brazilian from Rio de Janeiro, and I have been an animal protector since I was 5 years old. In the beginning, I didn’t fully understand what being a protector meant—I simply loved animals, and it was inevitable for me to bring them home whenever they were in danger, which in my city happens almost daily. Over the course of my life, I have rescued hundreds of dogs, cats, and other animals, including hummingbirds, goats, bats, and even a penguin.
I entered law school almost by accident; it had no direct connection to animals at first, but it turned out to be a key factor in resolving many rescue cases. Armed with the law and a strong will, I continued my rescue efforts but also started giving lectures in underserved communities, forming political partnerships, and working to change legislation.
Two rescues were especially important to me: Loui, a highly aggressive dog who had little to no chance of being adopted, and Maria, a dog who had suffered over 20 cigarette burns. I began learning Cesar Millan’s techniques—the Dog Whisperer from TV—and they became my guiding principles, helping me rehabilitate both Loui and Maria while also transforming my own life. Sadly, Loui has since passed away, but Maria remains by my side and continues to inspire me every day. She, along with all the other animals I’ve rescued, is the reason I am now pursuing academic research.
Harmonious coexistence between species is not just something I hope for—it is essential for the future of our planet. Emotional balance and education can only be achieved with the support of media platforms that have the power to reach large audiences.
My pain and the pain of others are compartmentalized in a sealed manner; it is not possible to perform operations of addition or subtraction between them.
